PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine, capable of enlarging an operation range in which compression self-ignition combustion is possible, achieving excellent fuel economy and exhaust emission control performance. SOLUTION: A distiller 9 distills fuel in a main gasoline tank 8 into high octane number fuel and low octane number fuel to be respectively stored in subsidiary tanks 10 and 11. The high octane number fuel is fed by a high pressure intermittent pump 16, a low octane number fuel by a variable pressure pump 15, to a fuel injection valve 17. An operation range determination part 2 of an ECU 1 determines an operation range based on speed and load. A fuel mixing ratio determination part 3 determines a use ratio (mixing ratio) of a plurality of kinds of fuel in reference to the operation range and residual values in respective residual quantity gauges 12 and 13. Pressure of a high pressure intermittent pump control part 5 and a variable pressure pump control part 6 is controlled in accordance with the mixing ratio, so that the use ratio between the high octane number fuel and the low octane number fuel injected from the fuel injection valve 17 is varied.
