PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection-type video display device capable of achieving enhancement of contrast, reduction of power consumption, and suppression of black floating in a liquid crystal projector. SOLUTION: A video signal processing circuit 23 receives a video signal to perform processing of frequency conversion etc., and performs processing of generating data, indicating average brightness (APL:Average Picture Level) of frame videos for each frame, A microcomputer 25 receives the APL data and controls the stoppage state of a diaphragm mechanism 21 and controls the halation quantity by a shutter device 27.
