PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply identifying a Far East Asia type or a Southeast Asia type in hepatitis B virus genotype C, and to provide a kit used therefor. SOLUTION: This method for examining whether a hepatitis B virus belonging to genotype C is a Far East Asia type or a Southeast Asia type, comprises judging on single nucleotide polymorphisms at at least one site selected from the group consisting of 166nt, 312nt, 400nt, 1041nt, 1044nt, 1047nt, 1050nt, 1053nt, 1155nt, 1721nt, 2065nt, 2158nt, 2559nt, 2561nt, 2633nt, 2958nt and 3008nt in the genome DNA of the hepatitis B virus.
