An optical fiber (or optical waveguide) strip is used, comprising optical fibers embedded in a casing material (40). The objective is to form a surface structure (130) at a location, in one or more of the optical fibers. Near this location, casing material is removed, forming an opening (60). Then the surface structure (130) is introduced into the optical conductor, near the opening. A laser beam (P) is used for this purpose. A laser used in the first stage, removes casing without affecting the optical fiber.
