<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sidelight type planar lighting system suitable as a back light for a flat-panel display provided with a plurality of areas with different luminance, wherein various interesting displays are required. <P>SOLUTION: A U-shaped cold cathode tube 15a is arranged facing end faces of three sides other than one short side of a rectangular light guide plate 14. A rear face 142 opposite to a light emitting surface 141 of the light guide plate 14 is equally divided into two sections S1, S2 in a longitudinal direction, and an area occupation ratio of a protruded part 142a formed in one section S1 is set larger than an area occupation ratio of a protruded part 142b formed in the other section S2, and a groove 143 having width of about 1 mm is formed along the borderline of the both sections S1, S2.
