PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and securely form a pattern of a functional material by applying ink after a hydrophilic/hydrophobic region is formed on a substrate surface. SOLUTION: This pattern forming method comprises a process of forming the hydrophilic/hydrophobic region on the substrate surface, and a process of applying ink on the substrate surface. A contact angle of pure water with respect to the hydrophilic region and the hydrophobic region satisfies the following relations:Δθ>60°whenθ2≤10°,Δθ>40°whenθ2>10°. Here,θ1 indicates the contact angle of pure water for the hydrophobic region,θ2 represents the contact angle of pure water with respect to the hydrophilic region, andΔθrepresents the absolute value of the difference betweenθ1 andθ2(¾θ1-θ2¾).
