PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator capable of improving the efficiency of taking in light rays emitted from a light source and lowering the dispersion angle of the light rays, and to provide a projection type image display apparatus using the illuminator. SOLUTION: The illuminator 100A has two light sources 1. Each light source 1 includes a light emitting diode 11 emitting white light, and an angle control lens 12. The angle control lens 12 reduces the dispersion angle of light emitted from the light emitting diode 11. An auxiliary integrator 2 is disposed on the light emission face side of the angle control lens 12. The auxiliary integrator 2 is a transparent member having a shape obtained by dividing a cylinder into four by two planes that pass the center of the cylinder and are perpendicular to each other. The auxiliary integrator 2 has a rectangular flat face serving as a light incident face, a recessed curved face serving as a reflecting face, and a rectangular flat face serving as a light emission face. The entire flat face, or light emission face, of each auxiliary integrator 2 faces the light incident face of the rod integrator 3 so as to be parallel to it. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
