The device determines the edge (6) position with a surface sensor (3) with individually addressable lines, whereby only lines (5) parallel to a laser line (4), corresponding to the height position of the edge and containing the scattered laser line are read. Edge defects cause a lateral displacement of the starting position or an intensity decrease of the scattered laser line in the line acquired by the sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method of fault detection on edges.
