PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an S-containing cyclic olefin resin having high transparency and refractive index and provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The S-containing cyclic olefin resin is prepared by metathesis polymerization of an S-containing cyclic olefin having a unit expressed by general formula (4) and has 1000-1000000 polymerization average molecular weight (wherein R<SB>15</SB>to R<SB>20</SB>express each independently H, a 1-20C alkyl group, a 1-20C aralkyl group, a 1-20C aromatic group. cyano group, a 1-10C alkoxy group or a heterocyclic compound; R<SB>17</SB>to R<SB>20</SB>may be a halogen group; R<SB>17</SB>and R<SB>18</SB>, R<SB>19</SB>and R<SB>20</SB>may form a ring containing C, O, S or N; R<SB>21</SB>and R<SB>22</SB>express each independently H or methyl group; q expresses 1 or 2; r expresses 0 or 1).
