A variable tension belt fixing device of an image forming apparatus and a driving method thereof are provided to enable tension to be applied to a fixing belt only within a tension section and enable the tension to be released even in the tension section during an idle state, thereby improving the life of the fixing belt and driving stability. A variable tension belt fixing device of an image forming apparatus comprises the followings: a main roller(11); a pair of belt driving rollers(12,13) which are arranged to lie adjacent to the outer circumference of the main roller(11) and are pressed in a main roller side; a fixing belt(20) which is traveled by the pair of belt driving rollers(12,13) and has a nib section(201), which is pressed in the main roller side when tension is applied to one side by bordering on two rollers(12,13) and has a non-tension section(202) where the tension is released in the other side. At least one of the pair of belt driving rollers(12,13) applies and releases the tension in the nip section(201) by being temporarily and independently driven.
