A carrier recovery and equalization architecture for use with a digital communication system receiver can include a carrier tracking loop (100) having an equalizer (110). The equalizer can be selectively positionable to a location that is external to the carrier tracking loop (FIG. 3) and to a location within the carrier tracking loop (FIG. 2).
