PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact projection-type image display device with high contrast. SOLUTION: The device is equipped with a polarization beam splitter to align light emitting from a light source unit into a polarized beam of either a S-polarized light or a P-polarized beam; an optical characteristics switching element which electronically and periodically changes wavelength ranges of the exiting beam from the polarization beam splitter; an image display element as a light valve means which forms an optical image, according to image signals from the emitted beam of the light source unit; and a means of irradiating the image display element with light beams, in a plurality of colors sequentially emitted from the optical characteristics switching element. The beam, emitted from the image display element, is made incident on a projection lens, and the optical path from the light source unit to the projection lens is structured into approximately a U-shape.
