The invention relates to novel members of the WIPI family of proteins which represent valuable target structures for the modulation of cellular autophagy and also for the diagnosis and treatment of autophagy-associated diseases. The invention also relates to nucleotide sequences which encode said proteins. The invention further relates to a method for detecting and/or examining autophagy in addition to the identification of active substances which influence the autophagy, in particular in an active and/or inhibiting manner.
