PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of preventing a document table from being soiled due to touch of the hand or hands of an operator when removing a document. SOLUTION: When a document holding cover 2 is opened to remove a document S, air is sucked through holes 22 by a sucking means actuated depending on opening operation of the document holding cover 2. Thus, when the opening operation of the document holding cover 2 is carried out, the document S placed on the document table 11 is sucked to the holes 22 together with air and stick to the document holding cover 2.
