PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compact bridge expansion joint which exhibits sufficient allowance to movement in a horizontal direction and is adapted to a wide gap. SOLUTION: Gap protruding members 12A, 12B made of T-shaped steel have anti-deflection plates extended vertically from the bottom face of a flange spaced apart from each other to a distance corresponding to a gap. Each of the members has one flange extended to the gap. An elastic member 14 is vulcanized and bonded to upper surfaces of the flanges of the gap protruding members 12A, 12B. Shear layers 18A, 18B constituted of a part of the elastic member 14 are formed on the flanges (protruded part) on both sides which protrude to the gap respectively. A joint part 11 formed of the elastic member 14 is integrally provided on upper parts of the respective shear layers 18A, 18B and laid between the shear layer 18A and the shear layer 18B. A load support plate 17 is embedded in the joint part 11. Both ends of the load support plate 17 are supported by the gap protruding members 12A, 12B through the shear layers 18A, 18B.
