PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a retardation film having high retardation and uniform retardation in the plane and thickness directions, and without causing substantial display irregularity within the plane when being incorporated in a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a retardation film includes: a step of uniaxial stretching by gripping both ends in the width direction of an amorphous thermoplastic resin film having substantially no orientation with tenter clips and widening the film in the width direction; a cooling step after finishing the stretching step; and a heat treating step. The temperature T1 (°C) in the cooling step and the temperature T2 (°C) in the heat treating step satisfy formulae of (1):T1≤Tg-20 and (2):Tg-20≤T2≤Tg+30, wherein Tg (°C) represents a glass transition temperature of the amorphous thermoplastic resin.
