PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extremely easily perform area determination by utilizing an integrated value Nall. SOLUTION: A reducing area in which a conversion angleθcorresponding to the opening/closing timing of an intake valve is reduced as a work amount S is increased and an increasing area in which the conversion angleθis increased are formed in a variable valve gear. The number of times by which the reducing area A is switched with the increasing area B is counted from the start of an engine (steps 11, 12).
