PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical module where design freedom in thinning it in its optical axis direction can be increased, and also, the position of a lens can be accurately detected. SOLUTION: The optical module 7 has: a lens group 21; a lens holding body 22 for holding the lens group 21; a base 23 for lens, holding the lens holding body 22 so as to be movable in the optical axis direction of the lens group 21; a motor 13 including an output shaft 13b extended in a direction orthogonal to the optical axis of the lens group 21, for rotating the output shaft 13b; and a transmission mechanism 53 for converting the rotation of the output shaft 13b into the translational motion in the optical axis direction to transmit to the lens holding body 22. The transmission mechanism 53 includes a cam gear 56 which rotates around an axis nearly parallel to the optical axis and which has parts (the first reflection part 56g and the second reflection part 56h) having different reflectance formed on a surface nearly vertical to the optical axis, and also, a photoelectric sensor 61 having a light emitting element and a light receiving element is arranged near the aforesaid surface.
