PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable response time partial flow trangent sampling system and method. SOLUTION: A partial flow dilution tunnel of this gas sampling system is connected to an exhaust from an internal combustion engine. An accurate gas sampling result is allowed by coping with a delay from a time point when the engine generates the changed exhaust up to a time point when the moved exhaust reaches a probe position. An estimated time delay is determined by this manner, and the gas sampling system is operated based at least partially on the estimated time delay until the exhaust reaches the sampling position.
