PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic information inquiry method capable of verifying identity of both parties only by exchanging extremely small characteristic information without exchanging shared information per se on premises for both the parties have the same information. SOLUTION: Every time a reference A receives an inquiry, an argumentαis determined. Based on the argument, a part of stored electronic information Ca is cut out. An attribution thereof is measured to form the characteristic information I<SB>A</SB>, which is transferred to a reference B together with the argumentα. The reference cuts out the same part of the electronic information Cb stored by itself as the reference A by applying the argumentα, and the characteristic information I<SB>B</SB>is formed in the same method as the reference. The identity of two electronic information Ca and Cb are verified by collating with the characteristic information I<SB>A</SB>received from the reference. In this method, a collation result with high reliability can be obtained by transmitting an extremely small amount of information without transmitting contents of the electronic information at all.
