There is provided a character input device enabling a user to smoothly perform character input which is realized by firstly selecting one of character groups to each of which a plurality of characters correspond and further selecting one of the characters corresponding to the group so as to decide it as an input character. A display control unit includes a character group corresponding image (94-1 to 94-10) corresponding to a plurality of character groups and an input candidate guiding image (108) for guiding a character correlated to a target character group. The display control unit causes display means to display a character input screen where the character group corresponding image corresponding to the target character group is separately displayed (100) and the character specified as the currently selected input candidate among the characters correlated to the target character group is separately displayed (110) in the input candidate guiding image. An input character decision unit decides the character specified as the currently selected input candidate as an input character according to the input character decision operation.
