<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improving a fuel cost in starting an internal-combustion engine, and also to surely and automatically start the automatically stopped internal-combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: When the automatically stopped engine is started, when the engine can be started by push starting with the gradientθof a road surface, a torque converter is locked up and the engine is started by the push starting, by maximizing the gear ratio of a CVT when the residual capacity SOC of a battery is less than a threshold Sref 2 (S240-S260). When the residual capacity SOC of the battery is not less than the threshold Sref 2, engine is started by using a starter motor (S270). Consequently, the engine is automatically will be stopped or started, even when the remaining capacity SOC of the battery is reduced by frequently stopping/starting the engine in a jam on a down slope, so that the fuel cost in a vehicle is improved.
