PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the microfabrication of an element and reduce manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: A lower electrode 2 is deposited on a lower substrate 10. A nonlinear resistance film 4 is deposited on the electrode. An insulating film 6 comprising, for example, a conductive particle 18 is deposited on the nonlinear resistance film 4. An upper electrode 8 is deposited on the insulating film. In figures, the reference numeral 12 designates liquid crystal. The reference numeral 14 designates a counterelectrode. The reference numeral 16 designates an upper substrate. Since the function of the nonlinear resistance film 4 is obtained only in a minute region corresponding to the conductive particle 18 of the nonlinear resistance film 4, a region functioning as the nonlinear resistance film 4 is adjusted not by microfabrication but by changing the density of the conductive particle 18.
