PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the registration of overlapped image data in an apparatus for storing and managing image data. SOLUTION: The image management apparatus is provided with: an image reading part for reading out an original image; a feature extraction part for extracting character information and arrangement information from the read image data; an image data management part for allowing the extracted character information and arrangement information to correspond to the image data; a storage part for storing the image data and the character information and the arrangement information corresponding to the image data; a management information retrieval part for retrieving whether character information or arrangement information coincident or similar with/to the character information or the arrangement information extracted from the read image data has been already stored in the storage part or not; and an image updating part for substituting the character information and the arrangement information extracted from the read image data for the coincident or similar character information and arrangement information when the coincident or similar character information or arrangement information is stored and then substituting the read image data for stored image data corresponding to the stored character information and arrangement information.
