An image data generator comprising a means (21) for forming a basic part representative of the framework of a character or a figure in units of subpixel, a framework adjusting means (23) for shifting all basic subpixels constituting the basic part to a predetermined direction in units of subpixel depending on the position of minimum number of basic subpixels thus forming a shifted basic part, a means (24) for assigning a display contribution level to a framework pixel to which the basic subpixel belongs and to at least one adjacent pixel based on the shifted basic part and line width information, and an output value generating means (25) for converting the display contribution level assigned to a framework pixel or an adjacent pixel into a luminance value.
