An image forming apparatus and a method for automatically changing a CID mode thereof are provided to enable a control unit to control the image forming apparatus to change a set CID mode into another CID mode when CID information is not detected in received fax data, thereby improving user's convenience by enabling the image forming apparatus to automatically change the CID mode instead of a user who manually changes the CID mode according to a method which an exchange of a corresponding area supports. A method for automatically changing a CID(Caller Identification Display) mode in an image forming apparatus comprises the following steps of: receiving fax data from the other party(S220); enabling a set CID mode to be automatically changed into another CID mode when CID information is not detected in the received fax data(S230,S240); detecting the CID information with the changed CID mode(S250); and displaying the detected CID information on an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) unit(S260).
