Class 20(ii) A putlog unit 1 has welded at or near each of its ends a sheet metal channel shaped coupling 2, Fig. 1 forming sockets 6, 7, adapted to receive the lower and upper ends of standards 8, 9, each socket having a clamping device adapted to grip the associated standard and one of clamping devices 20 also serving to clamp a ledger 16 in position. As shown in Fig. 1 one coupling is welded to the putlog inwardly from one end leaving a protruding portion 1a which may be used to support a scaffold board and to anchor the scaffolding to the building face. Each coupling 2 is formed with projecting tongues 4 welded on each side of the putlog 1 on which the ends of the standards 8, 9 abut. The socket 6 is formed with tongues 10 welded to and bridged by a channel-shaped distance piece 11 containing a close fitting nut 12 which receives a bolt 13 passing through holes in a U-shaped clamping member 14 and the distance piece 11 so that on tightening the bolt the free ends of the member 14 bear against the standard 8. The socket 7 is formed with tongues 15 having upper inclined edges 15a and bridged by a distance piece 17 containing a nut 18 which receives a bolt 19 serving to clamp a L-shaped plate 20 against the standard 9 and against the ledger 16 when in position. As shown in Fig. 4, the channel-shaped distance pieces and nuts are replaced by solid blocks 11, 17 provided with threaded holes.
