A navigation apparatus having a function of a data communication with a portable terminal and an operating method thereof are provided to safely identify a call sender when a call is received, to control a portable terminal and thereby to enable a user to make a safer phone call to others while driving a car. A navigation apparatus having a function of a data communication with a portable terminal comprises a display unit(116), a data communication unit(130), a controller(110), a voice outputting unit(122) and a memory unit(120). The display unit(116) has a touch screen function and displays a received image signal. The data communication unit(130) makes a data transmission or receipt via a wireless/wired communication with a portable terminal. The controller(110) performs a navigation operation in the first mode. The controller(110) outputs an image or a sound signal by making a signal process of data received via the data communication unit(130) and transmits a command signal generated by the touch screen of the display unit(116), and data resulted from data processing of an image and a voice signal inputted by an external device to the portable terminal via the data communication unit(130) in the second mode. The voice outputting unit(122) outputs a sound signal, outputted by the controller(110), to an external device. The memory unit(120) stores map data or moving picture data and connects one memory to other memory wherein the memory stores the data.
