An apparatus and a method for inputting characters by using motion of a mobile communication terminal are provided to grasp the motion of the mobile communication terminal itself and select a character string corresponding to a pattern of the motion before inputting the characters, thereby inputting the characters without pressing a keypad of the mobile communication terminal. An apparatus for inputting characters by using motion of a mobile communication terminal comprises the followings: a motion sensor(120) for measuring the motion of the mobile communication terminal; a sensor switch(110) for activating or inactivating operations of the motion sensor(120); a pattern extractor(130) for extracting a pattern of the motion from the motion measured from the motion sensor(120); a character mapping unit(140) for mapping the pattern of the motion extracted from the pattern extractor(120) into a character; and a display(150) for displaying the character mapped by the character mapping unit(140).
