A method for searching the travel route of a vehicle in a navigation system is provided to quickly and accurately retrieve the travel route by using map data with different scales for target and destination locations and a middle area, respectively. A GPS(Global Positioning System) receiver(310) receives a navigation message from a GPS satellite through an antenna. A sensor unit(320) includes plural sensors, such as a gyroscope and a speed sensor. A map data storage(330) stores map data. A controller(340) reads the map data having predetermined scales and applying a travel route searching algorithm on the different map data. The controller determines the current position of a moving object by using the signals from the GPS receiver and the sensor unit. A command input unit(350) generates an operation command and inputs the command to the controller. A display unit(360) displays the map data, the current position, and the travel route of on a display. A guidance voice generator(370) generates a guidance voice signal under the control of the controller and outputs the result through a speaker.
