An adaptive modulation method using multiple antennas and an apparatus thereof are provided to control the number of data symbols which will be transmitted for a unit transmission time, according to a channel state and perform a multiple antenna encoding process by using a dispersion matrix optimized to the number of selected data symbols, thereby providing optimum performance. An adaptive modulation method using multiple antennas comprises the following steps of: deciding the number of data symbols which will be transmitted during a unit transmission section according to the state of a transmission channel; performing a multiple antenna encoding process for the data symbols by variably configuring a dispersion matrix set according to the decided number of data symbols; and transmitting the data symbol, to which the multiple antennal encoding process is applied, through multiple antennas.
