A method and an apparatus for reproducing text subtitle stream files are provided to more efficiently perform the reproduction of text subtitle streams by storing the first register value, which specifies any one among text subtitle streams, in the first player status register, and reading the second register value, which shows whether a player can decode text subtitle streams, from the second player status register. A playlist file includes at least one or more play items for controlling the reproduction of main data. When the text sub title corresponding to the main data exists, a sub play item controls the reproduction of plural sub title clips by means of the sub path. The reproduction of sub title clips 1 and 2 is controlled by the sub play item. Since the sub title clips 1 and 2 are synchronized with the main data, the text sub title clips are displayed simultaneously on a display screen together with the main data.
