Water soluble, aqueous salt solution dispersible polymers and aqueous salt solutions containing dispersed polymers are produced by polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated soluble monomers in an aqueou s salt solution in the presence of at least one carbohydrate. The polymers and aqueous salt solutions containing the dispersed polymers ar e useful for paper making, water clarification and emulsion breaking.
