An LED surface light source and a backlight unit having the same are provided to generate a uniform white light without color blotch, by arranging LEDs such that two adjacent LEDs are surrounded by red LEDs or blue LEDs. A surface light source(1) comprises a plurality of red, green, and blue LEDs arranged in a matrix type. A first LED arrangement(10) includes two green LEDs, one red LED, and one blue LED orderly arranged. A second LED arrangement(20) includes two green LEDs, one red LED, and one blue LED orderly arranged. The first and second LED arrangements are disposed in rows or columns. In a combination of the first and second LED arrangement, the two green LEDs are surrounded by red or blue LEDs.
