A magnesium electrode is used with an electrode consisting of a mixture of cuprous chloride with one or more of the chlorides of silver, potassium, or ammonium. Fig. 2 shows in section a battery having partitions 25 forming compartments containing electrodes 10, 11 separated by wood or other absorbent material 12. A lid 26 is cemented to the container and is provided with filling openings 27 for each cell through which water is introduced when the battery is required for use. The openings are normally closed by a strip 28 of moistureproof material. The negative electrodes 10 consist of sheet magnesium or magnesium in the form of a screen or powder retained in a grid. The positive electrode may consist of the cuprous chloride mixture made into a paste with water and pasted on to a copper screen. |
