A single-phase inverter is provided to reduce the number of switches by commonly using a rectifier converting an input AC voltage into a DC voltage and an inverter inverting the DC voltage into the AC voltage. One terminal of an input AC power is connected to a serial joint point of first and second choppers(100,200). First and second diodes(D1,D2) connected in series to each other in an inverse direction are connected in parallel with the first and second choppers. Third and fourth choppers(300,400) connected in serial to each other are connected to ends of the first and second diodes. The first and second choppers have switching devices(S3,S4) switching according to a control signal, and a diode connected in parallel to the switching devices.
