A non-woven fabric comprises a number of fabric areas 41, Fig. 8, in each of which there are a plurality of different fibre concentrations of which one is in the form of a thicker area portion 38 having heavy fibre concentration and others are thinner area portions 40 which, for an area size the some as the portion 38, have a lighter concentration, the densities of all the different fibre concentrations being substantially similar, and the portions 38 being spaced apart from each other but connected by the portions 40. A web 10, Fig. 1 formed of mechanically engaged fibres by carding, garnetting, air laying or paper making techniques is carried by a foraminous belt 11 around a cylindrical drum 14. The belt 11 passes around freely rotatable rollers 12, 23, 25 and a driven roller 24 and 15, in screen form, made of stainless steel, bronze, copper, alloy, nylon or acrylic fibrous material or is a punched sheet of steel or synthetic plastic. The drum 14 rests on portions 19 of flanges 20 preventing axial movement thereof and which are fixed on the ends of shafts 17 and is driven by the belt 11. A manifold 26 is supplied with a fluid, e.g. water, which is projected through nozzles 27 at the ends of tubes 28 arranged in banks, as shown, and through apertures in the drum to rearrange the fibres of the web 10. The moisture entrained in the web may be removed by a slotted chamber 21 connected to a vacuum source. The drum surface comprises protuberances 32, Figs. 7 and 9, one for each aperture 31 and which are directed towards the belt 11. The fluid funnels through the apertures 31 to form tubercles 38 interconnected by the portions 40. In a modification, not shown, the protuberances 32 face away from the web 10. In a further modification, also not shown, the belt 11, as well as the drum 14, comprises protuberances which face the web. The fibres of the web 10 may be cotton, flax, wood, silk, wool, jute, asbestos, ramie, rag, abaca, glass, viscose or cupra-ammonium rayon, ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, polyamide e.g. nylon, polyester, acrylic, polyethylene, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl chloride, or polyurethane, alone or in combination with one another. A binder, e.g. an ethyl acrylate binder, may be applied to the web after fibre rearrangement by spraying, printing or immersion.
