A haircurler by which a tress of hair is coiled for setting or cold permanent waving treatment, comprises a receptacle having a mouth and a porous body consisting of a side wall 10 and end closure 12, the tress being packed in coiled formation against the inner surface of the receptacle by gas flow admitted through the mouth and discharged through apertures 14 in the wall and end closure. The curler is received in a lipped opening 20 of telescopically engaged impervious tubes 18, 16 which are connected by a fitting 24 to a vacuum source, projections 22 supporting the bottom of the curler so that the mouth thereof is in the plane of the lip. In use the hair is preferably damped and the curler, positioned in the members 18, 16 is advanced along the tress towards the scalp, the tress being automatically coiled within the curler which is secured by a bob pin 26. Curlers of different lengths and diameters are used for tresses of different lengths, e.g. at different parts of the head, the hair being coiled helically or looped as shown in Fig. 2, and by selecting a curler with the appropriate size of mouth the proper amount of hair is automatically selected. Two or more tresses may be coiled simultaneously and as shown in Figs. 3 and 4a the end closure is rounded to produce tight coiling at the tip of the tress and the curler has a dished impervious rim 34 to seat on the open end of the suction tube 38. The curler is made of plastic or metal, rigid or elastic and is of cylindrical, polygonal &c. cross-section, variations in the looseness of the coiled tress being obtained by variation in the taper or cross-section of the curler. In a further modification spring-urged clamping members, with meshing teeth to clamp the hair, are provided at the mouth of the curler.</p> |
