PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for protecting a communications device from denial-of-service attacks. SOLUTION: This method prevents or restricts the influence of the denial-of-service attacks in the communications device, having a packet classification rule base which enables all proper packets to be transferred to the communications device, and comprises a process for monitoring input packets to the communications device, to determine whether the state shows the presence of a denial-of-service attack. If there is denial-of-service attack, one rule base subset of the packet classification rule base is selected from among a plurality of rule base subsets, on the basis of one present operating state from among a plurality of operating states in the communications device.
