PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device capable of obtaining the optimum focusing state according to the purpose of a user even when a subject the distance of which cannot be measured is photographed, and to provide an imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: The automatic focusing device includes: a distance measuring means for measuring the distance of a subject; a distance measurement incapability detecting means that determines whether the distance measuring means is incapable of distance measurement or not; a setting means capable of externally setting a focusing position when the distance measuring means is incapable of distance measurement; and a drive means for driving a focus lens. When the distance measurement incapability detecting means determines that the distance measuring means is incapable of distance measurement, the automatic focusing device drives the focus lens to the focusing position set by the setting means.
