PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emergency rope brake device for elevator of compact construction assuring simple constitution of the whole device and its design and requiring a small space of occupation. SOLUTION: The emergency rope brake device 1 of the elevator includes a pair of brake plates 2 and 3 arranged pinching a rope and a driving mechanism 5 to hold by pressure the rope by moving one brake plate 2 so as to approach the other brake plate 3 with its position fixed and disengage the pressing and holding condition by separating the brake plate 2 from the other brake plate 3, wherein the driving mechanism 5 is equipped with a cylinder piston device for driving the brake plate 2, a hydraulic pump to supply a pressure working oil to the piston device, an electrically operated actuator to drive the pump, and a reserver chamber having communication with the pump and the cylinder piston device, in such an arrangement that these are installed in the same body in a pipeless single unit structure.
