<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing power consumption and shortening a copying time in response to a user's request. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a copy mode in which a document is read to form an image, and a plurality of other modes including a FAX mode. When the copy mode is selected through the operation of a mode selection switch when a sleep mode has been set, shifting from the sleep mode to a standby mode is carried out when a sleep mode shifting time Tx preset by a user is longer than a default time Ta that has been set from the time of shipment.
