PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect failure at a light receiving section for specifying the mounting position by detecting emission of light from the light emitting means of an ink tank for the mounting position of a plurality of ink tanks. SOLUTION: The recorder comprises a means for reciprocating an ink tank in the recorder, a mens for storing the quantity of light received by a light receiving means, a means for judging a maximum value out of stored quantities of received light, a means for comparing the maximum value with a predetermined value, and a means for notifying the comparison results.
