PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To change an operation mode without especially allotting a pin of a connector for a switch to change a failure diagnostic mode. SOLUTION: This electronic control unit 101 on which a mode change-over switch 3 is provided between a transmitting terminal TX and a receiving terminal RX of the electronic control unit 101 to which a checker 301 for diagnosis is connected is constituted so that whether an echo-back of a specified command or data output to the transmitting terminal TX is on the receiving terminal RX or not is determined and the mode change-over switch 3 is in an opened state and is free to work in the failure diagnostic mode by using the checker 301 for diagnosis when it is determined that no echo-back exists, while the mode change-over switch 3 is in a closed state and is free to work in the failure diagnostic mode on the electronic control unit 101 without using the checker 301 for diagnosis when it is determined that there exists the echo-back of the specified command or data.
