PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope light source unit which can be adjusted so that the maximum volume of light introduced into a light guide may coincide to the permissible maximum volume for the light guide of an endoscope. SOLUTION: The unit comprises a dichromic mirror 27, a visible light sensor 31, an A/D converter 38, a system controller 24, a memory 24a, and a diaphragm vane 36, wherein the dichromic mirror 27 reflects a part of incident white light to guide into the visible light sensor 31. The visible light sensor 31 transmits a signal through the A/D converter 38 to the system controller 24, the signal being proportional to the volume of the reflected light; and the system controller 24 has a memory 24a storaged with the permissible maximum volumes of white light for the light guide 16 of an endoscope 10 and adjusts the diaphragm vane 36 to position so that the white light may have a volume which is proportional to the light detected by the visible light sensor 31 to coincide to the maximum volume of light storaged in the memory 24 for the endoscope 10. The position of the diaphragm vane 36 for the coincidence is referred to as the limit of a region within which the diaphragm vane 36 can move to adjust light automatically.
