An LCD and a backlight unit are provided to suppress the generation of brightness blotch even when the number of LEDs, which are to be disposed on an incident surface of a light guiding plate, is reduced, by improving the structure of the incident surface of the light guiding plate. An LCD comprises an LCD panel(16) and a backlight unit disposed on a rear surface of the LCD panel. The backlight unit includes a light guiding plate(13) having an illuminating surface facing the LCD panel, a light source mounted on a flexible PCB(17) and installed at a lateral surface of the light guiding plate, and an optical sheet member(14) interposed between the LCD panel and the light guiding plate. The lateral surface of the light guiding plate, at which the light source is installed, has mountain-shaped inclination surfaces(131,132) when viewed from the illuminating surface of the light guiding plate. The mountain-shaped inclination surfaces of the light guiding plate serve as incident surfaces.
