PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a method for determining the characteristic curve of a broadbandλsensor by taking into account the diffusion shift of gas components or the complete lack of one or a plurality of the gas components in the determination of aλvalue. SOLUTION: In the method for determining theλvalue by the broadbandλsensor of an internal combustion engine of an automobile, an oxygen concentration is determined in lean operation and the lack of oxygen is determined in rich operation from a measured pump current, the sensitivity of the broadbandλsensor for gas to be detected, and a gas concentration ratio, and theλvalues are estimated, respectively, from the determination.
