PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce detecting errors of a recording paper width brought about by a detection sensitivity degradation of a recording paper detecting sensor loaded on a carriage for detecting a paper end in a main scanning direction of the recording paper. SOLUTION: In the case where a voltage value when a part to be detected is detected by the recording paper detecting sensor 64 is more than a predetermined voltage value, it is determined that the detection sensitivity of the recording paper detecting sensor 64 is in a high state, and a recording paper detection threshold is set to a high voltage value (recording paper detection threshold value S1). When the voltage value is less than the predetermined voltage value, it is determined that the detection sensitivity of the recording paper detecting sensor 64 is in a low state, and the recording paper detection threshold is set to a low voltage value (recording paper detection threshold S3). A paper end detection error D due to a detection delay of the recording paper detecting sensor 64 can be made constant by changing the recording paper detection thresholds among S1-S3, so that errors caused by the detection sensitivity degradation of the recording paper detecting sensor 64 can be eliminated.
