The assistance system (13) includes a controllable main brake (11) and/or parking brake (10) to bring the vehicle to a halt independently of the driver and a device to note required motion. It also has a reporting unit (14) to report driving state values (15, 16, 17, 23), an evaluation unit (18) to evaluate these values when the driver wants to reverse, and a deactivation unit (24) to deactivate the system when reversing is required.
