Class 110(iii), A rotor for a Francis turbine has cooling passages 7-9, formed in its vanecarrying part and connected with passages in the rotor shaft 3 for the supply and discharge of the cooling liquid. The coolant is fed to a central cavity 6 in the rotor by pipes 4, 5, and then flows through the passages 7-9 to the rotor shaft which serves as a return line. The passages 8 are of larger diameter than the other passages, are closed by plugs 12 and contain helical bodies 11 to speed the flow of coolant therethrough. The bore 5 may be dispensed with, in which case certain passages 9 communicate with the supply pipe 4.
